Young carer

A young carer is a child or young adult who spends time looking after and helping a member of their family, or a close friend, with every day tasks they cannot manage because of their illness.

That help may include shopping, making meals, doing the laundry, cleaning the house or nursing care such as giving medication or lifting someone up and down stairs or in and out of bed. Or maybe you give your time just to be with someone when they need company.

Blackburn with Darwen Carers Service support for young adult carers

Blackburn with Darwen Carers Service runs a Young Adult Carers project to help to reduce the impact the caring role has on a young adult carers life.  Their support includes one to one and group support, events and trips out, workshops and courses.  To find out more visit their website

Young Carers Project

In Blackburn with Darwen there is a Young Carers Project managed by Child Action North West (CANW) that offers support to young carers aged 8-19 in lots of ways. They can arrange evening groups, trips out, weekends away and activities especially for young carers, so that you would have a chance to meet up with other young carers of your own age and in the same situation.

The project also offers one-to-one counselling to give a much needed ear, together with information and advice for both young carers and their parents. They can also offer help and support to all family members, for example, assistance with housing benefits, problems at school, social care services and other voluntary organisations.

CANW Blackburn with Darwen Young Carers Project is part funded by Blackburn with Darwen Council and Child Action North West, together with a range of grants from charitable trusts and local organisations.
